Norfolk Record Office
On-line Catalogues

The Norfolk Record Office holds over 12,000,000 records occupying the equivalent of over six miles of shelving. To access these holdings, searchers must first consult the searchroom catalogues, approximately 37,000 pages, and other finding aids in order to identify documents likely to be of relevance to their enquiry.

The searchroom card indexes are arranged by place (primarily parish, but also by street for Norwich), person (very selective, usually a local notable or someone with an entry in the Dictionary of National Biography and includes family and corporate names) and subject. There are also other separate indexes for Maps, Schools, Architects, Norwich Town Clerk's Title Deeds, Settlement Examinations and Removal Orders.

Many of the catalogues are available via NROCAT - the Norfolk Record Office online catalogue. It contains catalogues not available via A2A (see below). For more information about what is included, see the NROCAT About page.

You can also search the Norfolk Record Office catalogues with other online catalogues at the same time using MetaLib, Norfolk Online Access to Heritage and Access to Archives.

MetaLib@UEA

Search the online catalogues of the East Anglian Film Archive (EAFA) and the Norfolk Record Office (NRO) together with other databases (including the library catalogue) via the Electronic Resources Portal of the University of East Anglia library. Use the 'Guest Log On' button on the right hand side, select Arts/Humanities in the 'Choose Subject Category' box and then select EAFA and NRO from the list of databases.

Norfolk Online Access to Heritage (NOAH)

Search the online catalogues of the Norfolk Library and Information Service, the Norfolk Museums Service and the Norfolk Record Office.

Access to Archives (A2A)

Search many of the catalogues of the Norfolk Record Office and the catalogues of hundreds of other archive repositories in England. Includes options for searching by name, subject and document reference, but please note that document references may not be consistent (e.g. BR 66/6 may be BR66/6 with no space between the elements). Contains catalogues not yet available in NROCAT (see above).
