What we do

We collect and preserve unique archives relating to the history of Norfolk and make them accessible across the world.

We've been given a four star rating by The National Archives, the highest available rating. In 2005, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council granted Designation status to our entire collection.

As the Diocesan Record Office for the Diocese of Norwich, the NRO is the place of deposit for the archdeaconries, deaneries and parishes in the diocese, including the area around Lowestoft.

We are also a Diocesan Record Office for the Diocese of Ely, making us the place of deposit for most of the parishes in west Norfolk.

You can access duplicates of many of our holdings in the Norfolk Heritage Centre, which is in the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library in The Forum, Norwich.

The NRO is a joint service of the county and district councils of Norfolk. We report to the Norfolk Records Committee (opens new window) twice a year.
