Jenny Lind Hospital for Sick Children, Norwich

Established in Pottergate in 1853, moved to Unthank Road in 1900. It later became part of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

NB: staff were informed before they started on the wards what their hours of work would be. Unless the rota showed they were given some time off, they were expected to be on the ward on duty. It was therefore easier to produce rotas showing ‘off duty’ rather than ’on duty’.

Kelling Sanatorium and Kelling Children’s Sanatorium

Now Kelling Hospital, it opened in 1903 for people suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis.

This was based at St Andrew’s Hospital, Thorpe St Andrew.

This is now North Walsham Community Hospital. It opened in 1924.

This opened in 1893.

Norwich Maternity Institution (City of Norwich Maternity Home)

A charitable institution, with premises at 63a Pottergate, taken over by Norwich City Council in 1919. It moved to Heigham Grove House, Earlham Road, in 1928. The building was badly damaged by bombing on 26-27 June 1942 (fortunately there were no casualties) and moved to Earlham Hall. It moved to Drayton Hall in 1950 and closed in April 1989.
