Research service

We have an experienced research team who can offer a variety of expert assistance.

How do I request a search?

You can do this by post or email. In order to carry out a search we need to know:

  • The information you are looking for
  • Any relevant details you already know
  • Any relevant sources you have already consulted

Please be concise and specific, whatever your request.

How long will it take?

Our team will contact you with an estimate of the time required to carry out your search. We aim to do this within three working days. Once agreed, we hope to complete the research within 10 working days.

How will you report back to me?

We will respond by letter, although this can be sent as an email attachment if you prefer. This letter will give full details of which records have been searched and the results found.

Entries from parish registers, etc, will be transcribed. Copies of any associated documents will be sent to you by post or email if you have requested them.

How much does it cost?

Our minimum fee is currently £24 per half-hour including VAT. Customers outside the European Union will be charged the non-VAT rate of £20 per half-hour.

How should I pay?

Advance payment is not required. We will notify you of the charge when the results are sent.

Please wait for the invoice to arrive separately before making payment.

Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to Norfolk County Council.

You can also make a credit/debit payment card by telephone. Full details are given on the invoice.

Are there any searches you cannot undertake?

We may suggest you employ a private record searcher if your inquiry is particularly complex or lengthy. They will be able to spend the necessary time on it.

The information I need is in Latin. Can you help?

Yes. We offer a transcription and translation service for a fee.

However, we may suggest you employ a private translator if staff are busy with other matters or the translation required is very lengthy.
