District councils
Our holdings for district councils are prefixed with the letters DC.
Urban and rural district councils were created under the Local Government Act of 1894.
Rural districts were based on the areas of existing rural sanitary districts, which had been created in 1875.
Sanitary districts were themselves based on the poor law unions.
Records of the sanitary districts can be found in the UDC and RDC records.
All UDCs and RDCs were abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972.
